INTRODUCTION:

The 2nd African Concrete Code Symposium will be held at the University of Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa, during the period of 29 to 30 November 2006. The context of the Symposium is to provide an opportunity for researchers, academics and practitioners who are interested in the development of the different sections of the African Concrete Code (ACC), to present and discuss the work of previously identified working groups. The Symposium will also bring together academics from beyond the African continent who have been involved in the development of multi-country frameworks for specification to allow for a consideration of the best-practice approaches in this field. The focus is strongly on addressing the twin problems of poor serviceability and low durability of very expensive concrete infrastructure in many countries across Africa. The ACC Committee is taking a multi-country, Africa-wide approach to addressing this problem as a strategy for maximising the effectiveness of the specification framework as well as the future development and contributions to improved international understanding of the associated issues.

CONFERENCE OUTLINE

The Symposium will take place over two days. On the first day the symposium will be in the format of formal presentations, mainly by ACC working group leaders who will present the proposed contents and structure of their themes and discuss current status of concrete construction and research, or on specific interesting projects in their regions. Public participation will be invited and South African participants will be able to earn points for continued professional development. The second day will be used for participation by working groups in a workshop format. The language of communication will be English. On day three of the event, visits to interesting construction sites will be arranged. Details for these will follow at a later stage.

REGISTRATION:

The registration fee for public participation on day one of the event is R 950. Deadline for final registration is 27 November 2006. An early-bird registration date of 31 October will attract a discount of R 200 on the conference fee.
